How Do Broken Toes Heal?

Pain is typically the first symptom that occurs if you have broken your toe. It can happen as a result of a heavy object falling on it, or if you have stubbed your toe against a piece of furniture. For severe fractures, there may be a popping sound at the time of the injury. Some of the symptoms that are associated with this ailment can include bruising, swelling, and difficulty walking. Patients have found moderate relief when the affected foot is elevated, as this may help to reduce a portion of the swelling. Additionally, the toe may be taped to the toe next to it which may be beneficial in providing extra support as the healing process takes place. If you feel you have a broken toe, it is suggested that you seek the counsel of a podiatrist who can guide you toward the correct healing process.

Broken toes may cause a lot of pain and should be treated as soon as possible. If you have any concerns about your feet, contact Dr. Harry I. Zirna from Lockport Foot Care, PLLC. Dr. Zirna will treat your foot and ankle needs.

What Is a Broken Toe?

A broken toe occurs when one or more of the toe bones of the foot are broken after an injury. Injuries such as stubbing your toe or dropping a heavy object on it may cause a toe fracture.

Symptoms of a Broken Toe

  • Swelling
  • Pain (with/without wearing shoes)
  • Stiffness
  • Nail Injury

Although the injured toe should be monitored daily, it is especially important to have a podiatrist look at your toe if you have severe symptoms. Some of these symptoms include worsening or new pain that is not relieved with medication, sores, redness, or open wounds near the toe.
